How is the star image enhanced by key themes semiotics and representations?

 Drake - best I ever had

Drake’s image is one of a ladies man who is at the centre of everything. This is clearly represented by him being a coach for a ladies basketball team.

He is shown being at the centre of a women’s life during the half time break of the basketball match as all the girls in his team are crouched around him all looking up at him. The fact they are looking up shows they are less powerful than him and have succumbed to his aura. Also during the break he is given a more high key lighting set up opposed to the girls who are light in a lower key. This illustrates his power and shows binary opposites (Levi-Strauss) of those in a power and those in not.

His womanizing talent is illustrated at the beginning of the video when a group of scantily clad girls run through a banner saying team drake on it. The fact they are running it suggests they really want drake teamed with the lack of clothing they have.

There is a section in the video which shows Drake flicking through his tactics for the game and at the same time there are jump cuts showing the girls getting ready in the changing room. This again shows drakes decision making power but also his power over women.

The video would be described as illustrative by Andrew Goodwin as the images match or relate to the lyrics. However you could argue that the music video is “amplifying” (Goodwin) the star image that the performer wants to portrays it is unlikely that he lives a day to day life like this.

Star image can be based on success as well and as most success is based on money made it could be said that the artist wants to make a product that sells highly and creates lots of money. If so the performer has cleverly used the idea that sex sells and has created a video that could be considered sexy by an audience.

The video certainly enhances drake’s star image or being a womaniser and having power which is stereotypical of male pop stars.

Theorists

Theory
Example
Idea
Levi-Strauss - states that every media product has binary opposites. For example good vs bad
Katy Perry – Hot n’ Cold
The two opposites are illustrated in the title and continued in the video as Katy Perry is complaining of a boyfriend that changes his mind too often.
Todorov – there are 5 stages in every media product
1.       Original equilibrium
2.       Disruption
3.       Recognition
4.       Attempt to restore normality
5.       New equilibrium
Thriller – Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson goes to cinema with his girl and then there is a disruption but then he gets the girl back again after the zombie issue.
Vladimir Propp – each story has a set of constant characters
·         Hero
·         Princess
·         Helper
·         False hero
·         Dispatcher
·         Father
·         Villain
·         donor
Shrek (trilogy)
Hero = Shrek
Princess = princess Fiona
Helper = donkey
False hero = prince charming
Dispatcher = king Harold
Father =  king Harold
Villain  = fairy god mother
Donor = puss in boots

Andrew Goodwin – what type of relationship is there between the visuals, lyrics and the music.
Illustrative = images provide literal representation
Amplifying = repetition of meanings to emphasise the main point
Contradicting = images contrast with the music
Disjuncture = when the meaning of the song is completely ignored.
Illustrative = chase and status ft Delilah – Time
Amplifying = Rihanna – Russian roulette
Contradicting =  dirty dike – hi im james
Disjuncture = Westlife – flying without wings

Twilight VS Bronson

Convergence synergy and new technology were used in the advertising of the Twilight franchise. There were many T-bar adverts on the side of buses, they also used standees in cinemas. When the films came out the Twilight Franchise changed the front cover of the books to match the cover they used when advertising the movies, this is an example of synergy. Furthermore twilight joined forces with McDonalds to create a twilight happy meal which could have increased the sales of the happy meals and the twilight film.
Twilight was also advertised on the internet including the website YouTube which can be accessed on many other forms of media such as the IPhone. This is an example of cross media convergence. Also the Twilight tracker was created which is again an example of cross media convergence. The twilight franchise has a huge amount of money that they can use to advertise their film in a variety of ways which develops 360 degree advertising. Due to the huge amount of money pumped into the marketing alone the product almost needs to sell and make the money back at the least.

Bronson is a vertigo film and due to the small scale nature of vertigo the product didn’t get the huge amount of adverting that twilight could achieve. Having said this Bronson did use cross media convergence by using YouTube as a source of advertising. They did this because it is cheap to do and many people are likely to see the trailer, the current views for Bronson trailer on YouTube are 333,905.
